Member Handbook

Foreword

  1. This handbook is an official document of UNC Badminton Club (hereinafter “the club”).

  2. It is drafted and maintained by UNC Badminton Club Committee (hereinafter “the committee”), including UNC Badminton Club Officials (hereinafter “officials”) and UNC Badminton Club Advisors (hereinafter “advisors”).

  3. It lists details of the club as well as the benefits and responsibilities of UNC Badminton Club Members (hereinafter “members”).

  4. The committee has the right to revise and interpret this document.

Section A. Club Organization

  1. There is no restriction (either affiliated to UNC or not) on becoming a member.

  2. Officials are formed by a set of UNC students who are willing to help with club management.

  3. Current officials consist of Advisors, President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations, Web Master and Captain.

  4. The committee includes all officials and advisors.  The club is managed by the committee and all club activities are handled by the committee.  In some cases, members will be invited to help out in the club events.

  5. The committee has the right to accept or reject a membership application.

Section B. Club Activities

  1. The main venue is UNC Fetzer Gym B. An alternative is UNC Rams Head Recreation Center.

  2. Officials reserve regular club hours through UNC Campus Recreation.

  3. The weekly schedule will be announced on the club website (see Section K.1).

  4. Club financial reports will be published at the end of every semester.

  5. Officials will organize tournaments, friendly games, or other types of fun events every year.

Section C. Member Benefits

  1. Only members have the privilege to play on the courts during regular club hours.

  2. Members may have discounts on badminton equipments, such as rackets, shoes and shuttles, while purchasing from the club sponsor(s).

  3. Members have discounts on fees of club-organized events (see Section B.5).

  4. Members will be on the club mailing list and receive emails, such as timely updates on club hours, tournament news, club financial reports, etc.  Members have the right to opt out of the club mailing list.

Section D. Member Responsibilities and Court Rules

  1. Members are required to check in to each club practice by presenting the member tags. (see Section F)

  2. All courts are shared by members in the courts managed by the Tag Board System (see Section F).

  3. Members are not allowed to enter the perimeter of any court when rally is on-going.

  4. Members are required to trash all used shuttles on the floor before leaving the gym.

  5. Based on the gym rules, food is not allowed in the court area.

  6. Members are not allowed to leave any trash on the court floor.

  7. Members must report to officials (see Section J) any members who do not comply with the rules in this section.

Section E. Membership Registration and Renewal

  1. Members are required to gain eligibility to access the UNC gym facilities before membership registration or renewal.

  2. The membership fee is $20 per year for each member (regardless of age) without any exception.

  3. The membership fee is non-refundable.

  4. Membership will be expired on July 31st every year, no matter when it is started.

  5. A new member should accept the release form (see Appendix 1) and fill out the registration form on the club website (see Section K.1).

  6. Membership should be renewed in August every year if a member wants to continue playing in the club.

Section F. Member Tags and Tag Board System

  1. Tags are the symbol of members.  Members of the tags have to be in the courts for the tags to be usable. Members are not allowed to move each other’s tag without consent.

  2. The tag of a member is valid until the membership is expired. New tags will be issued every year when membership is registered or renewed (see Section E).

  3. Courts can be only reserved by members with tags.

  4. Each court should only be reserved with at least four tags for 20 minutes.
    Notes on different scenarios:
    (1) If 4 players play doubles in a full court, 4 tags are required.
    (2) If 2 players play singles in a full court, 4 tags are still required. These players can use tags from other players or from extra tags they purchased to meet the tag requirement.
    (3) If 3 players play with 3 tags in a full court, then any member has the right  to join.
    (4) 3 players with 3 tags can also use half a court (i.e., 2 players (front and back) versus 1).
    (5) If 2 players play with 2 tags, they can only use half a court.

  1. Court time starts every 20 minutes, e.g., 5:00pm, 5:20pm, 5:40pm, etc. The courts for team practice (see Section G) or private training section (see Section I) are an exception .

  2. In most cases, every member will have only one tag. Members who want to play singles are allowed to purchase one extra tag (at the same cost of a new membership fee).

  3. Members who have signed up for the group training (see Section H), will have an additional sticker attached to their tags.

  4. It costs $5 to replace a missing tag.

  5. Guest tags are available from an on site manager (a designated person who is in charge of the tag board management in each practice). It charges $5 per day with another $5 as deposit. Guest tags should be returned to the on site manager on the same issued day after usage.

Section G. Team Practice

  1. Team practice section will be held on Thursday and Sunday afternoons if the courts are reserved.

  2. On days and hours reserved for team practices, the courts are prioritized for the UNC Badminton Team players.

  3. Non-team-members are allowed to join but only with the invitation or consent of a team member.

  4. Each court can be used for any practicing purpose.

  5. Tag Board System does not need to be applied. Court rotation should be a courtesy among the players loosely based on number of games played.

  6. Group training (see Section H) is required for members in the UNC Badminton Team.

Section H. Group Training (tentative and to be discussed)

  1. Group training section will be held on Sunday afternoons if the courts are reserved.

  2. The training fee is 40$ per year semester for each member who join the group training.

  3. Head coaches and assistants should be involved in the group training section.

  4. Assistants are responsible for checking the identity of trainees by tags (see Section F) and stickers, and help the main coaches during training.

  1. Trainees should follow the instructions of head coaches and assistants.

  2. Head coaches and assistants have privilege to revoke the eligibility of  a trainee if the training process is impeded directly or indirectly by him/her.

Section I. Private Training (tentative and to be discussed)

  1. One court will be provided for private training in a fixed time period on Friday afternoons if the courts are reserved.

  2. Private training has higher priority in this designated court. However, if no training is performed, members have the right to play in it.

Section J. Communication

  1. Members are encouraged to express his/her opinion on anything related to the club.

  2. The club mailing list is for all members on any club matters, news, announcements, etc.

  3. Private matters should be sent to individual officials and advisors.

  4. Non-members are encouraged to make their inquiries through the online form from the club web site (see Section K.1).

Q&A

  1. Q: What we do when someone who is not a member comes to play badminton.
    A: He/she needs to purchase a guest tag.

  2. Q: What do we do when a member forgets to bring in his/her tag?
    A: His/her identity will be verified by the on-site manager.  If he/she is a valid member, a temporary tag can be issued to him/her.  If not, he/she needs to purchase a guest tag for playing.

  3. Q: What do we do when someone gets hurt in badminton court?
    A: waiver and responsibility

  4. Q: What do we do when a child is running around the courts?
    A: Following the rules in the court and group training is required by every member, including kids.

  5. Q: What do we do when a member is not paying his/her membership fee?
    A: The member tag will be expired by the end of July.  Without paying membership fee, new tag will not be issued.  He/she cannot play anymore in August then.

  6. Q: What we use the money for?
    A: Paying for the coaches and tags, managing the club, etc. All will show in the financial reports.

 

Appendix 1. The Club Release Form

In consideration of being permitted to participate in any University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) Badminton Club and its sponsored activities (Activity), I for myself, my personal representatives, assigns, heirs and next of kin:

  1. ACKNOWLEDGE, agree and represent that I understand the nature of badminton activities and that I am qualified, in good health and in proper physical condition to participate in such Activity. I agree and warrant that if at any time I believe conditions to be unsafe, I will immediately discontinue further participation in Activity.

  2. I FULLY UNDERSTAND THAT: (a) badminton activities involve risks and dangers of serious bodily injury, including permanent disability, paralysis and death (“Risks”); (b) these Risks and dangers may be caused by my own actions or in actions, the action or in actions of others participating in the Activity, the condition in which the Activity takes place, or negligence of the “releasees” name below; (c) there may be other risks and social and economic losses either known to me or not readily foreseeable at this time; and I FULLY ACCEPT AND ASSUME ALL SUCH RISK AND ALL RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSSES, COSTS AND DAMAGES I incur as a result of my participation in the Activity.

  3. I HEREBY RELEASE, DISCHARGE AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE the UNC–CH Badminton Club, their representative administrators, directors, agents, officers, volunteers and employees, other participants, any sponsors, advertisers and if applicable, owners and lessors of premises on which the Activity takes place (each considered one of the “Releasee” herein) form all liability, claims, demands, losses or damages on my account caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the “Releasee” or otherwise, including negligent rescue operations; and I further agree that if, despite this Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement, I or anyone on my behalf, make a claim against any of the Releasees, I WILL INDEMNIFY, SAVE AND HOLD HARMLESS EACH OF THE RELEASEES, from any litigation expenses, attorney fee, loss, liability, damage or costs which may incur as a result of such claim.

I HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT, FULLY UNDERSTAND ITS TERMS, UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE GIVEN UP SUBSTANTIAL RIGHTS BY SIGNING IT, AND HAVE SIGNED IT FREELY AND WITHOUT ANY INDUCEMENT OR ASSURANCE OF ANY NATURE AND INTEND IT TO BE A COMPLETE AND CONDITIONAL RELEASE OF ALL LIABILITY TO THE GREATEST EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW AND AGREE THAT IF ANY PORTION OF THIS AGREEMENT IS HELD TO BE INVALID, THE BALANCE, NOT WITHSTANDING, SHALL CONTINUE IN FULL FORCE AND EFFECT.

AND I, THE MINOR’S PARENTS AND/OR LEGAL GUARDIAN, understand the nature of badminton activities and the minor’s experience and capabilities and believe the minor to be qualified, in good health, and in proper physical condition to participate in such activity, I HEREBY RELEASE, DISCHARGE, COVENANT NOT TO SUE ON THE MINOR’S ACCOUNT caused or alleged to be caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the “releasees” or otherwise, including negligent rescue operations and further agree that if despite the release, I the minor, or anyone of the minor’s behalf makes a claim against any of the releasees name above, I WILL INDEMNIFY, SAVE AND HOLD HARMLESS EACH OF THE RELEASEES FOR ANY LITIGATION EXPENSES, ATTORNEY FEES, LOSS LIABILITY, DAMAGE OR COST ANY MAY INCUR AS THE RESULT OF ANY SUCH CLAIM.
